► What is a Course Rep ?

Congratulations !
You are now a course rep

SO WHAT DO YOU ACTUALLY DO?
After you have been volunteered, elected or chosen to become a course rep what do you do now?

You work with departments, staff, students, and the SUSU to effect representation of student issues at a departmental, school, sourse, subject and year, levels.
This is done so that both the SUSU and the University are able to monitor the quality of what the University offers.

You are able to raise both questions and concerns about the teaching, or any other academic issues that come to your attention.
You provides for both the University and the SUSU positive and negative feedback surrounding academic issues.

Course reps are invariably used with campaigns from the SUSU and the University as they are one of the main contacts between the Student body and the SUSU/University

Job Description
You must promote yourself
Seek student views and opinions
Campaign on subjects
Liase and communicate with others
Attend training/seek support
Help individual students

In doing these you must be able to interact with and communicate with students that you represent: how do can you do so?

Student Casework
How do you get information from your student Cohort?
Ask departmental secretary to send out email identifying you to the students.

Ask for your contact details to be placed on departmental notice board. Word of mouth?
SUSU Support, all Course reps details are placed on this mini site and the main SUSU web page, if they are incorrect please Contact us.

Remember
Know your limitations (YOU ARE NOT A COUNSELLING SERVICE)
Seek advice/support for yourself
Refer / ask if necessary
Who to refer to?
–Department staff
–Student Officers Education Officer SUSU (Other Sabbs)
–SUSU Research and Representation Officer

So what do you do if an issue arises?
IDENTIFY WHAT IS THE ISSUE?
What would you initially say to the student?
What would you do next?
Is there anything else you need to consider?

Note down what the students issue is that they have asked about. Try to work out the importance and sensitivity nature of the issue; then you can try to work ou the next step

What has happened?
If the issue if academic raise it within the quality structure; if Welfare contact SUSU Welfare officer.
If it is an academic issue try secretary and tutors first.
If that does not help and it is relevant raise it in your Committee.

If you get no luck or help after this and you have not made them aware of the situation before this then let the SUSU know of the issues contact us
