Black History Month
The Students’ Union, NUS Wales Black Students’ Campaign and local churches teamed up to put on a celebration of Black History Month in Divas on October 31st. The event was a tremendous success and as ever I’m happy to support the Black Students’ Campaign in any way that I can. Our Campaigns advisor Edy has also be putting banners like the one below on the union website with the aim of showing the sabbaticals choice of influential black people who have made a difference to society. I chose Nelson Mandela, Raegan chose Rosa Parks, Ross chose Lenny Henry and Raechel went for Oprah Winfrey.
New Exec members
Congratulations to the new members of the Executive Committee! I’ve been able to have one-to-one meetings with most of them to work through priorities and plans for the next year. The entire committee this year has so much potential, I know that the sabbatical team are keen to help in any way that we can.
NUS Report
This past week has been the first round of NUS Zone Conferences. These are new and focussed around the different areas that students’ unions deal with. Lance attended the Welfare Zone Committee, Ross attended the Higher Education Zone Committee and I attended the Union Development Zone Committee where I was also elected to the NUS Union Development Zone Committee. This will allow me to bring in more ideas and have wider discussions at a national level on how to ensure the union’s departments and activities have the proper support that they need.
Remembrance Day
Hundreds of students and staff gathered at 11am for the silence as a mark of respect. The history society has been working so hard to sell poppies over the last few weeks and it was great to see so many on show. The Students’ Union organised the event, which was the first of its kind in the University! However, thanks should go to June Faulkner, in the School of the Environment & Society who felt so strongly about having an act of remembrance that she forced the Senate to change university policy. The Vice Chancellor and I will now be proposing a joint motion to ensure that this important event continues.
Visits, events, etc
I have been continuing to give Open Day Student Life talks and generally available to make a speech at the opening of an envelope.
Here are some other meetings/events I’ve quickly picked up scanning my diary (all important but won’t go through them all in detail)
· Cardiff Students’ Union
· Welsh Assembly launch of Student Engagement project (HEFCW/NUS Wales)
· ITV / BBC World interviews in response to WDL march
· Careers staff meeting
· UCU General Meeting
· Second Campus meetings
· Celebrating Diwali with the TASHAN Society
· Welcome dinner with the Islamic society
· Local Community Forums
· Loads of buffets in University
· Plans for Armistice Day
· Audit Committee for School of business & Economics
· Tidy Wales
· WWF Cymru
Then the usual internal union business and university committees that bring such joy to a sabbatical’s heart.
I’ve probably forgotten some stuff but hope this gives a good idea of my job.
