Abigail Egwuatu

Hello! My name is Abigail Egwuatu. I am a 3rd year Law and Criminology student, and I’m running for the 2022/2023 welfare officer position.

I care deeply about students’ welfare because I’ve learned that people perform their best when thriving mentally, physically, and emotionally. As a welfare officer, I want to support Swansea students to achieve synergy between all three. This involves ensuring that students are engaged and connected, feel heard, have proper representation, and feel like the most important matters to them are addressed.

At Swansea University, I learned to communicate effectively and persuasively to advocate for people’s needs and rights; actively listen, be a supporting shoulder and when appropriate, provide fitting solutions; and persevere through challenging situations to realize a desired outcome. I am very friendly, enthusiastic, and eager to help, and I believe that these traits, amongst others, make me a good fit for this role. 

MANIFESTO POINTS 

Ensuring student safety 

• Continue working with the South Wales Police and Swansea council to ensure the safety of students, especially with the student nightlife

• Organize more workshops with experienced leaders to educate students on sexual health and sexual misconduct

• Provide a text service option for students to receive support as needed, especially if they would prefer not to speak with a live person over the phone 

Improving housing and transportation 

• Work with First Cymru to improve the accuracy of bus times and ensure that students can easily get to campus 

• Organize opportunities for students to interact with housing agencies and potential landlords, to make well-informed choices on where to live 

• Create educational materials for students surroundings topics like choosing the right housing property, avoiding housing scams, knowing your rights as tenants, among others 

Supporting student mental health 

• Re-Introduce refresher’s week to give students a break between the end of exams and the start of lectures 

• Introduce more programs to help students unwind and relax throughout the academic year. One of which is a Destress week which would include activities such as Yoga, breathing workshops, boxing, pilates, etc.to promote self-care among students 

• Organize themed social nights covering topics like professional development, mental health, life lessons, adulting, etc., to help in the all-round development of every student and allow students to connect with each other 

• Inform students about all the mental health services available to them and ensure that they are easily accessible

Encouraging diversity and inclusion 

• Organize events and support causes that showcase the diversity of our student body and promote the representation of minority groups in the university 

• Create more opportunities for feedback gathering to help keep a pulse on what the community needs and provide solutions in a timely manner

• Improve accessibility of information for all students by creating a knowledge portal to act as a “one-stop-shop” for everything related to the welfare of students.

Helo! Fy enw i yw Abigail Egwuatu. Rwy’n fyfyriwr y Gyfraith a Throseddeg yn fy nhrydedd flwyddyn ac rwy’n ymgeisio am rôl y Swyddog Lles ar gyfer 2022/2023.

Rwy’n frwdfrydig iawn am les myfyrwyr oherwydd fy mod i wedi dysgu bod pobl yn perfformio eu gorau wrth ffynnu yn feddyliol, yn gorfforol ac yn emosiynol. Fel swyddog lles, rydw i am gefnogi myfyrwyr Abertawe i gyflawni synergedd rhwng y tri. Mae hyn yn cynnwys sicrhau bod myfyrwyr yn ymgysylltu ac yn gysylltiedig, yn teimlo eu bod yn cael eu clywed, yn cael cynrychiolaeth briodol, ac yn teimlo bod y materion pwysicaf iddynt yn cael sylw.

Sicrhau diogelwch myfyrwyr 

• Parhau i weithio gyda Heddlu De Cymru a chyngor Abertawe i sicrhau diogelwch myfyrwyr, yn enwedig gyda bywyd nos myfyrwyr 

• Trefnu mwy o weithdai gydag arweinwyr profiadol i addysgu myfyrwyr ar iechyd rhywiol a chamymddwyn rhywiol 

• Darparu opsiwn gwasanaeth testun i fyfyrwyr gael cymorth yn ôl yr angen, yn enwedig os byddai'n well ganddynt beidio â siarad â pherson byw dros y ffôn  

Gwella tai a thrafnidiaeth 

• Gweithio gyda First Cymru i wella cywirdeb amseroedd bysiau a sicrhau bod myfyrwyr yn gallu cyrraedd y campws yn hawdd 

• Trefnu cyfleoedd i fyfyrwyr ryngweithio ag asiantaethau tai a landlordiaid posibl, i wneud dewisiadau gwybodus ynghylch ble i fyw 

• Creu deunyddiau addysgol ar gyfer myfyrwyr ar bynciau fel dewis y tai cywir, osgoi sgamiau tai, deall hawliau tenantiaid, ymhlith eraill 

Cefnogi iechyd meddwl myfyrwyr 

• Ail-gyflwyno Wythnos Refreshers i roi egwyl i fyfyrwyr rhwng diwedd arholiadau a dechrau darlithoedd 

• Cyflwyno mwy o raglenni i helpu myfyrwyr i ymlacio trwy gydol y flwyddyn academaidd. Un o'r rhain yw Wythnos Di-Straen a fyddai'n cynnwys gweithgareddau fel ioga, gweithdai anadlu, paffio, pilates, ac ati i hybu hunanofal ymhlith myfyrwyr 

• Trefnu nosweithiau cymdeithasol â themau sy’n ymdrin â phynciau fel datblygiad proffesiynol, iechyd meddwl, gwersi bywyd, bod yn oedolyn, ac ati, i helpu gyda datblygiad cyffredinol pob myfyriwr a chaniatáu i fyfyrwyr gysylltu â'i gilydd 

• Rhoi gwybod i fyfyrwyr am yr holl wasanaethau iechyd meddwl sydd ar gael iddynt a sicrhau eu bod yn hawdd eu cyrraedd  

Annog amrywiaeth a chynwysioldeb 

• Trefnu digwyddiadau a chefnogi achosion sy'n arddangos amrywiaeth ein myfyrwyr a hyrwyddo cynrychiolaeth grwpiau lleiafrifol yn y Brifysgol 

• Creu mwy o gyfleoedd ar gyfer casglu adborth i helpu i ddeall yr hyn sydd ei angen ar y gymuned a darparu atebion mewn modd amserol 

• Gwella hygyrchedd gwybodaeth i bob myfyriwr trwy greu porth gwybodaeth i weithredu fel “siop un stop” ar gyfer popeth sy'n ymwneud â lles myfyrwyr.
