Zahid Raja, Students' Union President, welcomed the decision taken by the Learning & Teaching committee of the University to amend the Blackboard Minimum Content policy to require that lecture materials are made available on Blackboard in advance of lectures (at least 24 hours before.)
Zahid said: “I’m incredibly excited about this policy. Some lecturers do this already, so it will be exciting to see students across the University receive the same convenience. The proposer of the paper, Michelle Lee (Learning & Teaching Chair of the College of Human Health Sciences), rightly pointed out that the students who will see the biggest benefit will be those in the student community suffering from mental health, and access impairment.”
The Students’ Union pushed for this to become a requirement from this year, however, following debate at two meetings, it was agreed that to provide some lead in time. Therefore this will be a recommendation for 2013-14, before becoming a requirement in 2014-15.
Consultation and support will be carried out with students and staff during this period to ensure its success. Subject Reps will be critical in helping to define the delivery of this policy.
