Swansea Students’ Union supports every student’s right to peacefully protest and is committed to supporting the wellbeing of our student community.
As many of you will have seen, students have formed a camp on Fulton Lawn in support of the Palestinian people and to make demands of the University. We have been visiting the encampment since it first came up, and have been meeting those encamping, and making sure that the students there are fully supported. We have also facilitated students and student groups’ meetings with the senior leaders of the University. We will continue to do this to ensure students there and those impacted by the violence and protests are full supported and their welfare and safety will remain our main focus.
The violence, destruction and loss of life in Gaza is deeply concerning. We condemn this violence and continue to call for an end to violence and for sustained peace that promotes freedom from violence, terrorism, and fear for all. As a first step towards this, we add our voices to those calling for an immediate ceasefire. We also stand firmly against any Islamophobia, Antisemitism, and racism, which have no place in our Students’ Union, University or wider community.
Swansea Students’ Union supports every student’s right to peacefully protest and is committed to supporting the wellbeing of our student community. We will continue to liaise and maintain a line of communication with the students engaged in encampment, and between the student groups and the University to ensure welfare and safety of all students.
We would again like to acknowledge that these are difficult times for students and would like to reiterate that any student requiring support should reach out to the Students’ Union Advice & Support Centre, this is a free, confidential and impartial advice service staffed by a fully trained team, who can be contacted via email at advice@swansea-union.co.uk
