Officers' Update
Your team of Full-Time Officers have hit the ground running since staring their roles in July. They’ve done everything from interviews with the BBC to taking steps to make the University more inclusive for all our students, in addition to attending a number of virtual conferences and webinars to learn new ways to make your time at Uni the best it can be!
They’ve written up just a few things that they achieved in the last few months.
Ffion (President)
• Currently representing the student voice and the SU on a number of University COVID Workstreams.
• Heading the CONNECT project from the SU side. Created an SU CONNECT team to come up with ideas for the Student Innovation Funding.
• Booked the PIPs Programme to come in and give Resilience training to 10 members of staff.
• Attended the NUS UK Lead & Change Conference • Attended Y Talwrn Conference.
• BBC Filming- filmed interviews in both Welsh and English regarding what students can expect during arrivals and freshers.
• Met with Heads of every college - to see how we can work with them in partnership.
• Proposal for £230k was approved by the university for Arrivals and Freshers
Theresa (Education)
• Alongside SU staff and Liza Leibowitz, we have ensured that the University makes a commitment towards race on its Strategic plan.
• Been collating resources to help with the 'decolonising the curriculum' project.
• Attended NUS UK Lead and Change conference and NUS Wales Y Talwrn
• Planning several campaigns, which includes Black History Month, and the awareness of contract cheating and academic integrity.
• Working on training for student reps for the next academic year, which also includes cultural competency.
• Reviewing current Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) training within the equality committee alongside Liza and Georgia-Rose.
• Working on setting up a BAME Advisory Group to support the SU and University's work on addressing BAME students' concerns
• Been representing students on several work streams like to ensure that student voice is key in every decision making, especially in time for return to campus.
Georgia (Sports)
• Working with Sport Swansea on safe return to sports plan in line with phased reopening of sports facilities, Welsh government guidelines and National Governing Bodies.
• Hosted 3 webinars with Sport Swansea to inform all 54 sports teams of safe return to sport plan.
• Completed Mental Health First Aid course, and is ready to become a staff connector in the CONNECT project.
• Encouraged sports committees to participate in online course about Mental Health Awareness within Sport and Physical Activity.
• Worked on 'Active Minds' slides and campaign hoping to encourage and promote good lifestyle habits for engaging mind and body when studying, hoping to have these incorporated into teaching slides by lecturers.
• Working with Liza on 'Wellbeing Wednesdays' campaign which will also be worked on in conjunction with the Wellbeing Champions project.
• Attended NUS Lead and Change Conference which was beneficial and useful for networking with other officers.
• Currently planning a Dragons Den style activity for sports teams, working with Thomas Weller of the Student Voice Team.
Liza (Welfare)
• As part of developing Whole University Response to Tackling Sexual Misconduct, I have been working to introduce a sexual misconduct module, housed on Canvas, that will be done on a compulsory basis for all student leads as per their HEAR accreditation.
• Working towards providing consent training alongside the Societies & Services Officer Georgia-Rose.
• Working alongside Theresa and Georgia-Rose to introduce a resource on Racial Equality.
• Successfully worked on the University Strategic Plan alongside SU staff and Theresa to adequately represent BME students.
• Proposed to the current BME Officer Rodrigues Mbongompasi that we should look into any racially driven disciplinary process through a Race Policy we will create together.
• Working to provide more safe spaces within the University.
• Working to get permanent donation bins placed on both campuses to promote sustainability within the Union and University.
• Working towards providing training in areas of significance such as Mental Health First Aid and Racial Equity to SU staff.
• Worked to get FTOs adequate training in Mental Health First Aid, dealing with Critical Incidents, etc.
• Inquiring as to whether lectures will be scheduled around Friday Prayers for our Muslim students.
• Updating the Mental Health Guide to factor in Covid-19. • Created International Students Mental Health Guide, worked on this in conjunction with the International PTO Obaje Comfort.
• Introducing Wellbeing Wednesdays alongside Sports Officer Georgia.
• Working on CONNECT Project with Ffion.
• Preparing for upcoming campaigns.
Katie (Welsh Affairs)
• Launched Welsh Wednesday Instagram takeovers on @susuofficers.
• Working on collating resources to promote allyship amongst staff, and where they can display that.
• Liaising with Estates to continue to ensure accessibility is worked on for students.
• Chaired workshop exploring how to encounter Welsh language, culture, history, etc., with students.
• Working on proposal to have Welsh Coordinator roles on committees of sports clubs and societies.
• Planning events for Freshers in collaboration with Academi Hywel Teifi.
• Planning for a Welsh buddy scheme and learners support group.
• Attended NUS Lead and Change and developed good network with other officers for future collaboration opportunities.
• Working alongside Georgia-Rose on a Sustainability Policy for the Students' Union.
Georgia-Rose (Societies & Services)
• Set up a Trans and Non-Binary support group that will be available to students and staff from September.
• Produced a Sexual Consent leaflet that will be available to all students in the new academic year.
• Working on Consent Training alongside Liza that will be implemented to all student leadership roles e.g. student staff, societies, sports clubs, and reps.
• Attended NUS Lead and Change which had a lot of information about student wellbeing and decolonising the curriculum.
• Working with Liza and Theresa to tackle racial inequality and EDI.
• Working with Katie to improve Sustainability within the Students' Union including working on a Sustainability Policy. The team has got off to a flying start, and we can’t wait to see what they’re going to achieve over the rest of the year!

• Gweithio gyda Chwaraeon Abertawe i drefnu dychweliad diogel i chwaraeon yn unol â chanllawiau Llywodraeth Cymru a’r cyrff Llywodraethu Cenedlaethol
• Cynnal 3 gweminar gyda Chwaraeon Abertawe i roi gwybod i’r 54 clwb chwaraeon am y cynllun dychwelyd i chwaraeon yn ddiogel
• Cwblhau cwrs Cymorth Cyntaf Iechyd Meddwl, ac yn barod i fod yn gysylltwr staff yn y prosiect CONNECT
• Annog pwyllgorau chwaraeon i gymryd rhan mewn cyrsiau ar-lein am Ymwybyddiaeth Iechyd Meddwl o fewn Chwaraeon a Gweithgareddau Corfforol
