Following some outstanding work from your Full-Time Officer Team, led by Esyllt Rosser (President) and Gwern Dafis (Societies and Services), we have HUGE news to announce.
Many of you will be aware of the fact that our SU nightclub which held hugely popular nights, such as the infamous Tooters, has been closed for some time now. Whether you experienced the venue first hand or have heard tell of the legend of a Friday night Toot on campus, its presence has been sorely missed. Now, thanks to you, our students, and the efforts of Esyllt and Gwern in making sure YOUR voices are heard, we’re happy to announce your SU is working closely with the University Estates team to support a capital investment of over one million pounds.
This investment will completely refurbish the venue and create a reinvigorated and exciting multi-purpose space that can be used by our students, business partners, stakeholders, and wider community, and one which raises the profile of both the Students’ Union and University. The Students’ Union vision for the new venue is that it will be designed, managed and operated to provide an exceptional new space on Campus that can engage the student community by holding a wide variety of events and activities, including those that require specialist technical production.
The Students’ Union will prioritise these design factors in the following order:
i. Late night venue to host events such as club nights and live music
ii. Live performance venue for our performing arts societies day or night
iii. Bookable venue for all our student groups to hold relevant events and activities day or night
iv. Dedicated space for the Students’ Union and University to book for client centered events such as trade shows and exhibitions.
Work is scheduled to begin during summer 2023 and will be completed before the September 2023 Freshers calendar begins.
We understand that for some of our third years and other students set to graduate this summer that this news may be bitter sweet. Firstly, we’d like to tell you just how important your voice has been in making this happen. While you may not fully reap the benefits personally, the legacy you leave behind through improved student experience for future Swansea University students will have a lasting and meaningful impact. Secondly, we have planned to thank you for your contribution with a number of special events, including:
Tooters Reunion Night at our new and improved venue exclusively for graduating students and alumni. A free entry event which will be your opportunity to see the venue and reunite with all your Tooters partners in crime! We’ll let all eligible students know via email of the date and additional details once confirmed.
Naturally, we’re really excited about this news and we hope you are as well. We look forward to starting the project and we’ll keep you updated with progress. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please feel free to contact us via info@swansea-union.co.uk
